Watch Out for Shipping Fee on Ebay!

I was shocked to see the shipping fee of $118.99 on an ebay auction. And no, it wasn't a typo. The seller wanted to avoid ebay fees on buy-it-now auctions so listed the ornament as $1 for sale with a $118.99 shipping fee. And for that whopping fee you only get "standard" shipping!

I agree that this is extreme but with the Ebay 5 star system you cannot even recover the cost of shipping materials without getting dinged. As a buyer I always believed that a seller can charge whatever they want in shipping fees as long as it is clear what the shipping will be before you bid and win. Ebay's response is to put the cost in your opening bid, which then cannot be 99 cents and a free listing and of course eBay would then get a cut. The star ratings on shipping costs was justGREEDY eBay's way to get shipping and handling into the purchase cost so they could get a cut.

Inflated shipping violates eBays policies. If you see an item like this, report it to eBay and they'll yank it. When you view an item there is a "Report Item" icon right under the "Other Item Info" section. Click on this (you need to have an eBay account to access this area) and there is a drop-down where you can select excessive shipping.
I know this works because my husband regularly reports toy sellers and he's gotten many listings pulled.

I saw a similar one with shipping of $163 for a $1 BIN. I would feel really sick if I accidently purchased that item. Reported to ebay, we'll see if they yank it. They use to be good at yanking things that violated their policy, but lately it looks like they have been letting things slide. I suspect since this one takes money from Ebay's pocket they will move on it quickly.

Honestly, I have no use for Paypal and hate that I have to use it on ebay these days.
But I can't seem to stop shopping at ebay, so I guess I don't hate Paypal too much.

I was wondering....it disappeard from my watch list. Serves him or her right. If you asked the man on the street about eBay, he'd say "Well you can make it up in shipping." People need to be reasonable about shipping charges. I think everyone's been bitten once by high shipping, but you learn to carefully read the charges and shipping method.
I'm sure eBay monitors price to shipping fees. I know they once did it by category. I once got a pop-up that said "Your shipping charges are high for this category," or something like that. It was a heavy ornament, and I had to choose to override the pop-up, but it was there.

If it is the listing I think, register to win, it was re-listed earlier today with the $163 shipping, which is still there. I don't like fees any more then the next person, but you would think after having a listing yanked they wouldn't do the same thing again.

A good school of thought is this: Count on eBay and PayPal consuming twelve to twenty percent in fees. That's just a general estimation, not a fact. You don't have those fees in face-to-face transactions, but you may still have an overhead, such as swap meet fees, for those into that sort of thing.
