I was shocked to see the shipping fee of $118.99 on an ebay auction. And no, it wasn't a typo. The seller wanted to avoid ebay fees on buy-it-now auctions so listed the ornament as $1 for sale with a $118.99 shipping fee. And for that whopping fee you only get "standard" shipping!

I agree. First thing I thought is that the majority of ornament collectors would not go for that sort of thing.
I wonder if there will be other auctions that will sell for a higher dollar amount while that one sits unsold (unless somebody accidentally bids and wins without seeing the shipping fee first)?

Diana, the last line is what kills me.

"The Actual Price of This ornament is 119.99 total - Buy It Now price is swapped with shipping price to avoid high ebay fees. (greedy ebay)"

Greedy ebay! Ah, the hypoccrisy.

I've seen cheap BIN auctions with outrageous shipping, like back when the Wii was hard or impossible to find and innocent folks jump on it without paying proper attention to the high shipping and then get threatened with non-paying bidder action (it hasn't actually happened to me but I can guess that is the sellers next step in their evil & crooked little scam). Just like when people fell for buying a "chance" to win one and they were paying almost 200.00 to 300.00 for a "ticket" to win . . . and the real losers were the hard working parents trying to give their kids a great Christmas gift from Santa and more than likely didn't have additional funds to buy a legitimate deal. I think I was able to buy about 6 or 8 throughout that season at the Wal-Mart and shipped them to various friends & relatives @ cost until I ran out of decent shipping boxes. \:\)

As always, BUYER BEWARE and IF it sounds too good to be true, then it probably is.

The other thing to keep note of is that shipping costs are not protected under the buyer protection program. So if you have a dispute, the seller would not be required to refund the shipping costs....just the purchase price.

I agree that this is extreme but with the Ebay 5 star system you cannot even recover the cost of shipping materials without getting dinged. As a buyer I always believed that a seller can charge whatever they want in shipping fees as long as it is clear what the shipping will be before you bid and win. Ebay's response is to put the cost in your opening bid, which then cannot be 99 cents and a free listing and of course eBay would then get a cut. The star ratings on shipping costs was justGREEDY eBay's way to get shipping and handling into the purchase cost so they could get a cut.

HOLY TOLEDO Galloping Cat - thanks for pointing that out. Wow, talk about buyer beware - that's a huge reason not to ever fall for one of these switching-shipping-for-purchasing scams. I've had a hard enough time getting partial reimbursements for crummy stuff that is clearly the seller's fault on regular auctions.

Inflated shipping violates eBays policies. If you see an item like this, report it to eBay and they'll yank it. When you view an item there is a "Report Item" icon right under the "Other Item Info" section. Click on this (you need to have an eBay account to access this area) and there is a drop-down where you can select excessive shipping.

I know this works because my husband regularly reports toy sellers and he's gotten many listings pulled.

I saw a similar one with shipping of $163 for a $1 BIN. I would feel really sick if I accidently purchased that item. Reported to ebay, we'll see if they yank it. They use to be good at yanking things that violated their policy, but lately it looks like they have been letting things slide. I suspect since this one takes money from Ebay's pocket they will move on it quickly.

Edit Reason: typo in price

I'm all about capitalism....and I don't begrudge a company a profit margin. However, lately it does seem that the fees are stacking up as repeated payments to the same owner for the same transaction.

This isn't my area of expertise, but since the same company owns the both the auction site (ebay) and the payment site (paypal), it seems like they're skirting very close to monopoly status---and I'm surprised that this isn't being investigated.

Honestly, I have no use for Paypal and hate that I have to use it on ebay these days.

But I can't seem to stop shopping at ebay, so I guess I don't hate Paypal too much.

I was wondering....it disappeard from my watch list. Serves him or her right. If you asked the man on the street about eBay, he'd say "Well you can make it up in shipping." People need to be reasonable about shipping charges. I think everyone's been bitten once by high shipping, but you learn to carefully read the charges and shipping method.

I'm sure eBay monitors price to shipping fees. I know they once did it by category. I once got a pop-up that said "Your shipping charges are high for this category," or something like that. It was a heavy ornament, and I had to choose to override the pop-up, but it was there.

If it is the listing I think, register to win, it was re-listed earlier today with the $163 shipping, which is still there. I don't like fees any more then the next person, but you would think after having a listing yanked they wouldn't do the same thing again.

I'm not that knowledgable about the internal workings of e-bay, I'm just a buyer not a seller, but if e-bay's fees were that high, how could anyone make a profit selling on it?

A good school of thought is this: Count on eBay and PayPal consuming twelve to twenty percent in fees. That's just a general estimation, not a fact. You don't have those fees in face-to-face transactions, but you may still have an overhead, such as swap meet fees, for those into that sort of thing.

Wow - I had no idea fees were that high! OUCH.

Even so, if you want to do business there, you just have to take that info consideration and build it into the cost of doing business. Or take your business elsewhere. If enough people stopped using ebay over the high fees, then ebay might listen and ease up.
