Do I have to give Ebay my social security number if I don't exceed $600.00 in sales per year?

I went back to selling on eBay this year, and the first thing they wanted when I started selling was my social security number. The drop in sales from $20,000.00 to $600.00 was paused for 2022 by the IRS, so you won't get a 1099 for 2022.

Thanks Sandy. Ebay is just now asking for my number even though I didn't sell $600.00. They say if I don't give them my SS number, they won't send my payments. Wondering if that will be an issue in 2023 or if I should just give Ebay my SS number even though I know I won't sell $600.00.

They probably want that as a matter of having it on record. I guess just in case you might sell something over the limit. Just covering themselves.
We'll see what 2023 brings. eBay sent me an email about the threshold, and mentioned over 280,000 sellers answered eBay's request to contact their congressmen. It worked, so maybe this year it will work again.

My guess is the same as Sandy's. They want it on record so they don't have to track you down when the time comes to start issuing statements.
