How do I move my data to a new computer?

Windows (95 - XP)

First start YuleLog on the old computer Click on the Save Backup Data Files buttons. This will create three files named Backup1, Backup2, and Backup3. These files will be saved in the YuleLog2 folder which should be in the Program Files folder on your C drive. Copy these files to a floppy or to a USB Flash drive. On your new computer, install YuleLog, using your newest CD, as if it were a first time installation. When ever it asks, tell the installer that this is new installation. Then copy the backup files from the floppy or USB Flash drive to the YuleLog2 folder which again should be in the Program Files folder. Start YuleLog, again answering the question as if this were a first time installation. Fill out the name and address form and then at the Licensed to screen, click on the Utilities button. Click on the Restore From Back Up Data Files button. This will read your data into the new copy of YuleLog and then you should be good to go.

Windows (Vista or Windows 7)

Copy these files to a floppy or to a USB Flash drive. On your new computer, install YuleLog, using your newest CD, as if it were a first time installation. When ever it asks, tell the installer that this is new installation. YuleLog needs to be installed in the Documents folder on Vista or Windows 7 Machines. When you get to the screen that asks where you want to install, click on the Browse button. Select Users. Then Select your directory (could be your name) It is whatever name you use to sign in to your computer. Select Documents. Click continue and this should install YuleLog in your Documents folder. Then copy the backup files from the floppy or USB Flash drive to the YuleLog2 folder which again should be in the Documents folder. Start YuleLog, again answering the question as if this were a first time installation. Fill out the name and address form and then at the Licensed to screen, click on the Utilities button. Click on the Restore From Back Up Data Files button. This will read your data into the new copy of YuleLog and then you should be good to go.

First start YuleLog on the old computer Click on the Save Backup Data Files buttons. This will create three files named Backup1, Backup2, and Backup3. These files will be saved in the YuleLog2 folder which should be in the Applications folder folder on your hard drive. Copy these files to a floppy or to a USB Flash drive. On your new computer, install YuleLog, using your newest CD, as if it were a first time installation. Click on the Restore From Back Up Data Files button. This will read your data into the new copy of YuleLog and then you should be good to go.

How do I use the Backup feature?

Whenever you quit YuleLog, it will ask if you want to save backup copies of your data. This is to prevent a loss of your data, if your main files are lost or corrupted. When you answer yes to this question, YuleLog will save a special compacted copy of your database into a file (called backup.fmp12) saved to your hard drive, into the YuleLog 2014 folder. The YuleLog 2014 folder is located in the Documents folder on Windows or in the Applications folder on Macintosh. To be extra safe, you can copy backup.fmp12 to another hard drive, a DVD,a USB Flash drive, or a cloud. This special file can only be read by the YuleLog program's Restore from Backup Data Files command in the Utilities menu. You can not open them by double clicking on them.

If at some point you need to recover your data from the backup file, install YuleLog, using your newest DVD, as if it were a first time installation. When ever it asks, tell the installer that this is new installation. You can then use the backup file that were saved to your hard drive or copy the backup file from a USB Flash drive or cloud to the YuleLog 2014 folder which again should be in the Documents folder on Windows, or Applications folder on a Mac. Start YuleLog, again answering the question as if this were a first time installation. Fill out the name and address form and then at the Licensed to screen, click on the Utilities button. Click on the Restore From Back Up Files button. This will read your data into the new copy of YuleLog and then you should be good to go.

How do I move items from one collection to another?

To move things from one collection to another,(assuming you have already created the second collection) go to the item you want to transfer, click on the yellow Price Info tab, and look in the lower right hand corner of the screen for a button labeled Transfer Ownership. Click on this and you will see a list of the collections and their numbers at the top of the screen. At the bottom of the screen, you will see a list of the ornaments, showing which collection they belong to. You can then click on the collection number of each ornament and list of collection numbers will pop up. Select the number for the collection you want, and the next time you open that collection, the items you moved will be there. When you are finished transferring items, click on the Done button in the top right hand corner of the screen.

How do I add items to my Collection ?

The best way to add ornaments to your collection database is to find them in the Price Guide and then let YuleLog" add them to your collection. Using this method, you can create a fairly complete list without ever typing a letter. From your collection, to get to the Price Guide, click on the Price Guide button at the top center of the Ornament Details Screen. You will see a list of all the ornaments in the price guide, starting with 1973. You will see a photo of each item as well as additional information such as artist, status, and Price Guide comments.
Once you find the ornaments you want to add to your collection, click in the check box, just to the left of the year, to mark them. When you have chosen all you want to add, click on the Add To Collection Button. You will be presented with a list of the items that you have chosen. If you wish to remove any from the list, click on the check box to deselect that item. You can now choose to set the status of an item to Own, Wanted, For Sale, Sold, In Layaway, or On Order, when you add it from the Price Guide.
Click on the ADD button at the bottom of the screen, and the checked ornaments will be added to your personal collection. (If you don’t want to add any ornaments at this time, click on Cancel and then click on the Return to Collection Without Adding button to get back to the Ornament Details Screen.)
The item’s number, year, name, artist (if available), and price guide information will be included. You will then be looking at the Ornament List screen. Click on the item’s to get back to the Ornament Details Screen. You can now step through each new ornament and add any Comments, Descriptions, Purchase Dates, Size, or Type Details that you want. To add more items, click on the Price Guide button at the top of the screen.

How do I find items in the Price Guide or my collection?

You can move through the Price Guide and your collection by using the scroll bar on the right side of the screen or you can find a particular ornament or group of ornaments by clicking on the Find button. You will then see the Find screen. When you are in your collection the Find Screen only finds items in your collection. When in the Price Guide, the Find Screen only finds items in the Price Guide.

Follow the instructions on this screen to narrow down the list of ornaments that is displayed. For example if you wish to see the 1995 Keepsake Christmas Ornaments, click in the Year field and type 1995, Select Keepsake Christmas from the list on the right and then click on the Perform Find Button at the bottom center.

The list will now only include the ornaments that meet the above criteria.

If you want to find the 1991 ornaments with Santa in the name, click in the Year field and type 1991, then click in the Name field and type Santa. Click on the center Perform Find button and you will be given a list of ornaments that meet these requirements. This is called an AND search since it finds items that are from 1991AND that are called Santa.

If you want to find all of the Santa ornaments for 1991 or 1992, repeat the above, but before you click on Perform Find, click on Add Request , Click in the year field and type 1992, then click in the Name field and type Santa. This is called an OR search since it finds items from 1991 OR 1992.

You can also use the operators from the Symbols pop-up list
in the Status Area (on the left side of the Find Screen) to look for more specific criteria. First click in the field you want to search on and then click on the arrow button beside Symbols to display the following pop-up list. Choose the operator and then type the criteria. Use this operator:
To find values that are:

< Less than what you type next
<= Less than or equal to what you type next
> Greater than what you type next
>= Greater than or equal to what you type next
= An exact match
... Within the range you specify
! Duplicate values
// Today’s date
? Invalid dates
@ One character only
* Zero or more characters
“” Literal text

For example, to find the ornaments from 1983 to 1985, you would type in the year field, 1983...1985 and then click on the center Perform Find button.

To find ornaments that don’t match the request click on the Omit box in the Status Bar after typing in the criteria. For example, to find all ornaments that are not Mint in Box, select Mint in Box in the Condition field, click on the Omit check box, and then click on the center Perform Find button. You will be presented with a list of all ornaments that are not Mint in Box.
To find records that have no information in a particular field, type an equal sign (=) or choose the equal sign from the Symbols list and then click on the center Perform Find button.

How do I add items that are either not Hallmark or are not in the Price Guide?

Non Hallmark items are added one at a time by clicking on the NEW button at the top center of the blue Ornament Details screen. You will get a warning telling you that the best way to add ornaments is to use the price guide. Since the items that you want to add are not in the price guide, ignore the warning and click on the ADD button. Click on OK and you will be given a blank form. You can then enter the data for your item. Add new items by clicking on the NEW button to add each new item.

If you want to create a separate collection for non-Hallmark items you can do the following:

YuleLog allows you to keep up with many different collections. These collections can belong to one or many different collectors. Every collection has to be associated with a collector. One collector could break his or her collections into a "For Sale" collection and a "Personal" collection. A collector could have an "Ornament" collection and a "Merry Miniature" collection. Or you can simply keep everything in just one collection. The choice is up to you. This feature of YuleLog also makes it nice if you want to log a friend or relatives collection.

When you click on the Continue button at the opening screen of YuleLog, you will see three buttons. The Primary Collection button will take you directly to Collection 1. This is the first collection that was added. This is just a quick way of getting to the collection you use most.

The Work with Collections button will take you to a list of all of the collections. You can then choose which collection you want to work with.

The Work with Collectors button will take you to a list of all of the collectors. You can then add or edit information on the collectors that you track.

To add additional Collections for yourself, click on the Work with Collections Button. You will see a list of your collections. At the top of the screen, click on the NEW button.

You will see a warning telling you that you must first add a collector. Since you are the collector and you have already been added (when you first ran the program), click OK to add another collection.

You will see a list of the collectors. Click on the little circle to the left of your name to select which collector this new collection belongs to. Then click on the Continue button.

You will be taken to the Collection Form View screen. Give the collection a name. Then click on the Work with Items in the Collection button

You will be told that there are no items in the collection and be asked if you want to add some. Click on the OK button and you will be taken to the price guide

Since you want this collection to be non-Hallmark items, you are not really interested in the price guide, but since this program was written for Hallmark items, you need to add at least one Hallmark item to get started. You can delete this item later

Click on the select check box of any ornament and then click on the Add To Collection button. Then click on the Add button again.
You will be taken to the Ornament List view, showing the ornament you just added. Click on the name of the ornament to get to the Form View.

In the future, you can get to this collection by going to the collection list when you start the program (by clicking on the Work with Collections button) and clicking on the name of the collection you want to work with. Or you can change from one collection to another, by clicking on the Change Collection button at the top of the Ornament Details screen.
