Herald on Tour

Herald's Progress

Ornament Drive

Welcome

Herald's story started out as a humorous post by one of the regular YuleLog Bulletin Board users, Steve Kozicky. Steve's post about finding that one of his ornaments, Hark its Herald, had somehow lost a leg.

One post led to another and the next thing you know, Herald is touring the United States (and maybe the world!). Steve thought that since Herald was becoming a star, he should help some good to happen.

This led to the Herald on Tour and the Children's Hospital Ornament Drive. YuleLog Software is proud to help in this effort.

A Note from Steve

The idea for the Children's Hospital Ornament Drive started with Herald. When I saw how popular the little elf and his antics were with the YuleLog readers it made me think about the nature of the humor. A little elf with one foot.

Not wanting to capitalize on the fun at the expense of a one-footed little guy it made me realize that there are real people, many of them children that experience real life losses. I saw an opportunity to get all of us with a common bond - Hallmark ornaments - to go beyond the limits of our computers and reach out to help others, especially children.

It wasn't an idea that took days to form, it just hit me like a bolt of lightning. When I saw how many people were interested in the Herald Tour, I knew that they would also be the ones to make this happen.

While it isn't much, at least it's something.

If we can get everyone out there to donate just one of the ornaments that they picked up for 50 or 75% off, or one that they don't hang up every year, or one that they feel would make a little boy or little girl happy to see during their stay, we could have enough ornaments, 1 from every state, to donate to hospitals all over the U.S. Since Minneapolis, MN is YuleLog Herald's hometown I figured Children's Hospital in Minneapolis would be the first. From there, we can get enough additional ornaments to send to a hospital in each of the Herald Tour host states.

The address is:

Herald On Tour

Barb, from Lenexa, Kansas, got the Herald on Tour rolling with the following YuleLog Bulletin Board Post!

Good Evening, All - Every time Steve posts, I, and I'm sure many others, get a good laugh! Dare I suggest that Herald do a U.S. Tour, visit all 50 states? [Oh, no, here we go again!!] It could be done alphabetically by state (is Alabama first?), with YuleLoggers acting as "host family" for a day, then off to the next state, and so on, winding up, after Wyoming, in K.C. for convention! But we'd have to hurry--it's less than six months until Convention, so that's more than eight states per month!! A friend and I actually did this once with an armadillo (naturally preserved, not living) to promote a Great Armadillo Races fund raiser several years ago. We also put together a photo album of his journey and exploits, with all photos appropriately captioned. We put the album on display at the Races. It was a BIG draw! We made up scarves rather than T-shirts so that one could wear their scarf along with the official T-shirt of the Armadillo Race. Now for Herald it could be a Herald Hat (Linda, are your ready for this?). Since our YuleLogger T-shirts are gong to be purple, then maybe the hats should be white so as not to clash, or orange so that they do! The photo album could be the Herald Herald, and ought to include photos of Herald with his Hallmark Ornament Buddies Online (that's HOBOs for short) at each stop. I say we do it!

So Herald is on the Move!

Barb and Steve are carefully coordinating Herald's odyssey and you can read the messages leading up to this adventure and follow as the story continues by reading the

Herald's Progress

As Herald makes his way across the USA, we will list his stops and his HOBO's here.

Here is where you can follow the trail of our celebrity :

3/3/98 - Tuesday: Herald and his tuba (a/k/a Hark! It's Herald-#4 in the Series) left Steve's in Minneapolis, headed for Iowa in his personal luxury liner.

3/4/98 - Wednesday: Herald arrives at Carol's in Emmetsburg, Iowa, and he also visits Joyce. Very busy two days for Herald. Herald Odometer: 203 miles.

3/5/98 - Thursday: Herald departs Iowa, headed for Illinois.

3/6/98 - Friday: Travel day for Herald.

3/7/98 - Saturday: Herald gets caught up in the excitement at the UPS depot on Jefferson Street in Chicago. Must be lots of good folks there because he hung around all weekend.

3/8/98 - Sunday - Rest day for Herald. (Too much partying with the UPSers??)

3/9/98 - Monday - Herald arrived at Cindy & Greg's place in Chicago. Herald Odometer: approximately 740 miles.

3/10/98 - Tuesday - After a day of sightseeing, Herald posts his first official message to the HOT board. Not bad for a one-footed elf!!

3/11/98 - Wednesday - Herald departs Illinois, headed for Laura's in Indiana.

3/12/98 - Thursday - Travel day for Herald. Herald likes the FedEx crowd, too; doesn't want to get off the truck. Laura chased the FedEx truck Thursday night, but lost 'em.

3/13/98 - Friday - Herald arrives at Laura's in Cannelton, Indiana. Herald Odometer: approximately 1,180 miles. Survives near-teething experience at the hands of a 6-month-old. All is well.

3/14/98 - Saturday - Herald departs Indiana, headed for Ohio. He's gaining weight and hasn't even gotten to Mary Anne & Wayne's cookie jar yet.

3/15/98 - Sunday - Herald arrives at Wayne & Mary Anne's in Lebanon, Ohio. Herald Odometer: approximately 1,390 miles. Cookies and milk were waiting for him upon his arrival.
